Air cleaner filters are used to purify the air. This is a common piece of equipment used in cars and small rooms where there is a need of recycling the present air. Most commonly air cleaner filters are devices that remove solid particles from the air like dust pollen mould and also harmful microbes like bacteria and keep the air fresh and clean. Air filter cleaners are very important in gas turbine engines as using clean air will notably increase the efficiency of the engines.

There are many methods which are used by air cleaner filters to remove unwanted particles from the air. The most common method is to use fiber elements in the air cleaner filter to which the dust and other particulate matter will stick to thereby cleaning the air. There are other complex methods like the static electric charge method. In this method the air cleaner filters use static electricity to attract dust and other particles thereby filtering out clean air. Oil bath filters were used earlier but now due to sophistication in technology these have fallen out of favor.

There have been many significant improvements in air cleaner filter technology due to advancement in fluid sciences. These filters are most important in gas turbines and in air conditions that help to preserve the human health. Paper foam and cotton filters are also most commonly used in the air cleaner filters. These air filters should be cleaned or changed at regular periods of time to ensure the optimum performance of the engine.

There is much research done on the flammability of the air filters. These air filters are classified into class one and class two types based on their flammability. The class 1 filters do not become fuel when they are exposed to flame. This means they produce only negligible amount of smoke when they are burnt. The class 2 filters however become ready fuel when exposed to the flame. These produce moderate amounts of smoke while burning.

The air filters are designed in many shapes and sizes to fit the area of flow of air. The air filters should be regularly changed as they get clogged over time filtering out air. The clogging of air filters not only produces impure air but also reduces the airflow through the passage.

For an engine this could mean serious drop in the performance of the engine. The size of the air filter also depends on the passage of air. There are different applications of the air filters but the most common application would be in internal combustion engines, gas turbines and air conditioners for both cars and rooms.

Paper is one of the most common materials that are used for air cleaner filters in automobiles. This is mainly because they are cost effective as well as efficient. Also these are easily replaceable. Oil wetted foam elements are also known to be used as air filters in automobiles. Foam was a known choice for air cleaners in many applications before the improvement in air cleaning technology.
